By What Authority

So how to do expose umbilical worldviews that are under girding most moral arguments these days? 

We appeal to authority.

We want to know

By what authority do you say this?
By what authority do you assert that?
By what authority should I believe what you are telling me?

For the Christian the authority is God. There is no one higher than God. God is over all and as Creator He has determined right, wrong, moral, immoral, just, unjust – He has given us commands to follow and a way to live our lives through His Word, the Bible. So the Bible, written by God using the hands of man, is our authority.

“The authority of the Holy Scripture, for which it ought to be believed, and obeyed, depends not upon the testimony of any man, or Church; but wholly upon God (who is truth itself) the author thereof: and therefore it is to be received, because it is the Word of God.”

– Westminster Confession of Faith 1.4
